How To Create An Access Application

Creating A Microsoft Access Application

Creating and developing an Access Database

Step 1 For A Successful Database – Planning

We spend a great deal of our time planning and designing our database projects before we every start writing code. Working with you, gathering information that we need to develop a truly excellent Microsoft Access database is critical to the database development cycle. Here just a few of the many steps we incorporate into our process.

Our friends at Microsoft use techniques similar to ours to start as Access database project.

Microsoft Access Application Design

Once you have worked through the stages of Planning a Microsoft Access Application, you will then move onto creating the application in Microsoft Access. If you have correctly structured the database design, the application design will be much easier to implement. Having spoke to your database user’s, they will have given you ideas for what is required in the database application and you can begin work on the interface that will be used.

The following checklist details the application needs and data sources:

Investigation Phase

  • Talk to the users who will be working with the database application to find out their data input needs, reporting needs, querying and other data needs and application security needs.
  • Create a rough prototype by using the Database Wizard and other wizards and templates.

Planning the Database Tables

  • Account for all of the data.
  • Normalise the data tables.
  • Set up the database relationships and referential integrity.
  • Create tables, write in field descriptions in design view and add sample data to test the design.

Access Database Development Procedures From Microsoft

Microsoft has several tips and tricks available to help work with MS Access. It is possible to create a very simple Access database from the template tools offered in the Microsoft Access program. We do not recommend using the following technique to build your custom business database. If you start creating your database with a template, it may take several hours to redesign the overall database to make it functional for your specific needs.

We always advocate extreme caution in using a template for your valuable business data. Templates are excellent for mock up designs, testing, and for getting preliminary concepts for your database. Templates, however, will not have all the features your business database requires. That is why you must have a professional, like MS Access Solutions, step in as your expert Access developer to create your business database.

Here is information from Microsoft Support about creating an Access database from a template.

Steps To Create An Access App

An Access app is a database that you use in a standard web browser, but which you design and modify in Access 2013 or later. The data and database objects are stored in SQL Server or Microsoft Azure SQL Database, so you can share the data within your organization using on-premises SharePoint 2013 or Office 365 for business.

You can create an app either from a template or from scratch. To create a custom Access app:

  1. Open Access 2013 or later (like Access 2016) and click Custom web app.
  2. Enter a name and the server location for your app (you can also select a server location from the Locations list), and click Create.
  3. Next, you’ll need some tables in your new app. You can either add predefined tables that are like templates, which in some cases include ready-made related tables, or just start with blank tables.
  4. To add a template table: In the Search box, type in what kind of information you’ll be storing such as, tasks or people. Click the Search button and select a suitable table from the provided list.
  5. If the template has related tables, you’ll see the multi-table icon. For example, when you add the Assets table, Access also adds the related Employees table.
